Paul Kruger knows a thing or two about seizing opportunity.
As a defensive end for the Baltimore Ravens, opportunity presented itself, about half way through the Ravens’ 2012/2013 season.
Baltimore’s depleted linebacker group led the club to shift Kruger to outside linebacker, where Paul helped spur the Raven’s unexpected playoff run. In the final eight regular season games, Kruger recorded 7.5 sacks, for a team high total of nine. His stellar performance continued through the playoffs, where he posted 2.5 sacks, a pass deflection, and forced a fumble in Baltimore’s victory over Indianapolis.
In the next game, against the Denver Broncos, Paul pressured Payton Manning to force a devastating interception in overtime. Flushed out of the pocket, Manning threw a pass that was picked off, setting up a game-winning field goal for the Ravens.
The Super Bowl XLVII presented another opportunity. Again Paul rose to the occasion with one of the best performances of his life. He made three tackles and recorded two key sacks of Colin Kaepernick in the red zone. Those sacks held the 49ers to field goals instead of touchdowns, paving the way for Paul and the Ravens to win the NFL Championship.
Yet that Super Bowl win at the age of 26 was not the first significant event in Paul’s life. Twice before he had overcome adversity in ways most people never have to.
At the age of 13, Paul was in a car accident that left him without his spleen and with just one kidney. Just a few years later, during the month of January and an evening out with friends at the University of Utah, Paul was stabbed in the ribs and abdomen. Like the car accident, the event was life threatening. Yet Paul was back in the weight room by June putting in the hard work that would ensure he’d be ready for what would become Utah’s undefeated season, which included a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama. Kruger contributed 61 tackles, led the team with 7.5 sacks, 16.5 tacks for a loss, and an interception.
All of that experience — overcoming misfortune and seizing opportunities to achieve unprecedented levels of performance — remains with Paul as he attacks the next chapter in a lifetime marked by victory. Today he creates opportunities for others with private equity investments, real estate endeavors, and a brand of leadership forged from his unique experiences as a survivor, a thriver, and a champion.
